This project centralizes three literary characters, all
animals, from two Russian novels: Behemoth and Banga from Mikhail Bulgakov’s "The Master and Margarita" (1967) and Sharik from Fyodor Dostoevsky’s "Notes from a Dead House" (1861). These characters serve as vehicles for understanding spiritual rituals and their relationships to authority as well as the animalization of queer identities in literature through personal identification with non-human characters. I am exploring the authoritative limits and flexibility of these three characters, whether that be structural (environmental or physical authority), spiritual (encounters with the divine or with the hellish), or internal (transformation and conflict pertaining to the self). The album sonically tackles the following concepts: each characters’ agency in connection with personal
spiritual anamorphism (transformation) through Bakhtinian consummation of the self and the other; encounters with the divine and the antichrist, specifically Behemoth’s relationship with the Professor Woland and his inferiors, Banga’s encounters with the divine and the hellish as well as himself, and Sharik’s encounter with The Divine Sophia.
